Window treatments have two main applications for any room: function and decor. Coverings can help block light, conserve energy, and ensure privacy; all while adding beauty and warmth to a room. There are many window types and practical needs. Take a look below for inspiration for your unique space.

Drapery and Curtains

Custom Grommet Style Drapery in Condominium

Grommets are discs with a hole that the rod goes through to create a pleat. This is considered a casual look and stacks back into a smaller space when opened. Excellent for condominiums.

Sometimes I get messages afterwards like “when my husband got home he said ‘That looks great!’ and my husband never usually says anything about decorating.”

Here are some common drapery terms to start off on the right foot!

Drapery / Window Treatment
We use the term ‘drapery’ or ‘window treatments’ for any fabric application to a window.

Curtains
The term, Curtains are sometimes used without realizing that curtains are drapery treatments that have no lining behind the fabric. Curtain includes ‘sheers’ which are lighter fabric that one can either see clearly through or a semi clearly view.

Lining
An addition layer of polyester blend or cotton usually white or cream in colour (much cheaper than the main fabric) that is sewn with the main fabric to create a fuller look, a light barrier and to protect the investment of the main fabric.

Headers
The drapery heading refers to the pleated style at the top of the drapes/curtains.

Roman Shades

A roman shade is a solid surface piece that is sewn to fit inside or outside a window frame for the purpose of filtering or blocking out the sun. They are either pulled up or down depending on the need and can be paired with a valance to complete the look. Others are swags or pleated with various hemlines.
